What is Black Friday?
Black Friday ( more like black weekend) is the "the day after the US holiday of Thanksgiving, regarded as the
first day of the Christmas shopping season, on which retailers make many
special offers." It is a mad rush of christmas shoppers wanting to get their sale items.
The term 'Black Friday' was named due to shoppers all going out at once in which was causing many traffic accidents and violence. The name was first recorded in 1966 by Earl Apfelbaum, a dealer in rare stamps; he said, "'Black Friday' is the name that the Philadelphia Police Department gave to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day.
Many retailers did not agree with the negative name therefore they used it to their advantage. Instead of having such a negative view on the day, they manipulated it to reflect their success. 'Accountants use black to signify profit when recording each day's book
entries. Red is used to mean loss. Therefore, Black Friday means
profitable Friday to retailing and to the economy. '
